The foundation of
Midwest Kart Club - Geraldton goes way back to 1960 when a small band of enthusiasts got together to form the first Go Kart Club in Geraldton. Charlie Mildwaters became the inaugural President and under his leadership a gravel track was built at the old West End.
On June 8th 1960, with 30 or more drivers, a crowd of 1500 spectators witnessed the first organized Go Kart race in Geraldton. The Club moved to the Utakarra site in 1962 and a national standard track was constructed to attract the best drivers in the state. After thousands of racing miles the urban squeeze and public pressure finally forced the track to be closed 1971. A group of drivers continued the sport using temporary street circuits until about 1980 after which the sound of tiny wheels and smoky Victa's would not be heard in Geraldton for another decade.
In 1990 ex Karratha driver Greg Purser successfully negotiated for land at the Geraldton Speedway complex in Moonyoonooka 10 kms out of town. Construction of the 550 meter bitumen track began in 1992 and the first race meeting was held in July 1993. Greg Purser commented " we couldn't have built the track without the tremendous support of local business and the tireless dedication of many individuals, we made heaps of friends and burnt a few bridges along the way but the end result made it all worthwhile". Today that same dedication continues as the club works to improve the facilities available to the competitor and the spectator.
Described as a drivers track the 550 meter circuit twists it way down the Moonyoonooka slopes through a set of tight ess's & hairpins before coming back onto a short straight with a flat out right hand bend onto the main straight. Spectators are well catered for with the recent building of three mini grandstands providing an unobstructed view of the circuit.
Planned improvements include new pits, shelters and track extensions which will bring the track to a total length of 750 meters.
